My headset: The Plantronics Audio 478 USB

The wires connecting to the headset do seem light and delicate.

We’re on our computers; we listen to music, we game, we voice and video chat to each other. We’re going to need a decent mic and earphone solution that’s convenient and reliable. I’ve gone through at least 6 or 7 different types of headsets, microphones, headphones; some wireless, some expensive, some ergonomic, square, round, etc. I’ve tried Logitech and no name brands. They all have a longevity of nearly less than a year, sometimes worse. So when something lasts beyond that, like 2 years, and isn’t damaged or degraded in any way, when the foam ear pads look almost totally fine, I take notice. That headset being the Plantronics Audio 478 USB.

The Plantronics Audio 478 USB

It’s a foldable, USB, PC & Mac compatible headset. Plantronics is known for it’s Bluetooth and other wireless headsets. Those are fine. But I’m thinking about a reliable device that I’ll use at home, or with my laptop while on the go, that isn’t going to break when dropped. The pivoting microphone isn’t amazing, nor would I recommend it if you want to do high quality recording, but it sounds pretty decent and works. Even comes with a cloth carrying bag.

Since it’s extremely light, it’s also totally comfortable on my head and ears, so you won’t have any problems with the contours of your skull.

The #1 Quality I look for in a headset

Is longevity. How will long can I use this device before it breaks or dies? Because you use these devices daily, you’ll be touching them, dropping them, accidentally sitting on them, pulling them from their socket, perhaps even throwing them around. They’re going to take a beating. So I always look for a headset that folds, or is designed with hinges, in case any of the above happens.

Ease of Use

The input control has 4 buttons: volume up, down, mute and answer call. Since I use Skype, simply pressing the Phone button answers the Skype call, which is great when your hands are otherwise preoccupied.

Simple, easy interface. I tend to keep the mute button on.

It might just be me

Maybe I’ve been so careful over the years with my hardware. At closer inspection, the wires themselves connected to theĀ Plantronics Audio 478 USB headset are small and delicate, but get thicker toward the USB connector. But I’ve never removed the twist tie holding the 6.5 foot cord in place, and this prevents you from moving away from your computer in your chair, or having the device tug at max length when you’re walking around your office or room. That might be the most important quality keeping this thing working over the years.

The secret to a long life with a headset, perhaps.

Cost

I paid $43.72 CAD, which came to $55 after shipping. This is a way, way cheaper investment for a device that is still working after so long, with only showing minor use on the pads, which you can also buy replacements for. Especially in comparison to the various Logitech brands (which I have tried.) So yeah, I’d have to say I’m pretty happy with my Plantronics Audio 478 USB.

Yes. I am a happy fellow.
